Team Twiston Cheltenham Festival Day One

Day one of the Cheltenham Festival and we have seven runners going to post, hopeful as ever!

2.10 - The Arkle Novices Chase.

Al Dancer won over course and distance on his chasing debut back in October in a four runner race and has had two second spots in similar fields from three subsequent runs, the last at Doncaster towards the end of January. All over similar 2m trips, he’s made very good progress and coming into this fresh and suited by the course, has more to come. Looks to be very good each way value and a good run expected. Sam Twiston-Davies rides.

2.50 - The Ultima Handicap Chase.

Cogry needs no introduction with regard to Cheltenham Racecourse being such a regular here. He’s a four time course winner and has had all three outings this season here too, one of those four wins at the December meeting from a mark of 139. Up to 143 for the New Years Day meeting, he again ran well to take second. Goes from the same mark today, retains his form remarkably well and is sure to give another good account. Another that could be good each way value, Sam Twiston-Davies aboard.

Townshend has had just three chases for us, though had plenty of experience when with Willy Mullins, and has won on his last two outings at Huntingdon over 2m 4f then a better race at Ascot over 3m at a big price. Has gone up from 130 to 142 in the process but will be suited by both the soft ground and 3m 1f and may find more yet. Jamie Neild rides and takes off 7lbs.

3.30 - The Champion Hurdle

Ballyandy is another who needs no introduction round this track. He won the 2016 champion bumper having won earlier that season at the November meeting and has run well on his course appearances since including a second place at the December meeting. Comes in to this on the back of a good win at Haydock on heavy ground in January and is in very good form. Looks sure to go well and can prove to be good each way value in what looks like a very open renewal. Sam Twiston-Davies aboard.

4.50 - Northern Trust Handicap Chase

Earlofthecotswolds has had just three chases and though falling on his debut at Market Rasen in October, has progressed nicely since with a 3rd of 10 over 2m 3f in a handicap off of 140 at Ascot in November, then a win over the same trip at Exeter on soft ground in early December. Is in progressive form and could be on a decent looking mark of 139. A good run is expected over a trip and ground he’ll appreciate. Sam Twiston-Davies in the saddle.

Torpillo has also had just three chases but started his season with a hurdles win over 2m at Chepstow. Won at Warwick on his chasing debut over a similar trip in November but has finished 4th & 5th of 6 in both outings since. Steps up to 2m 4f here from a mark of 145 and is also expected to go well. Daryl Jacob rides.

5.30 - National Hunt Chase

The Hollow Ginge has won two of his five races this season, the first at Warwick over 2m 7f on his seasonal debut and then returned to form on his latest outing at Leicester over a similar trip. This is a big step up to 3m 6f but he’s still improving and looks to be a good stayer in the making. Expected to suit and he could be good each way value at a good price. Zac Baker rides in this amateurs race.

Latest winner

Kapgarry (11/4), Stratford Upon Avon, 9th March 2020.
