Cheltenham Gold Cup Day

Two off to Fakenham and three more at Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup Day

3.15 - Ballykan meets four rivals in this 3m handicap chase, but this is a very competitive event with arguably all in with a chance. However, he’s in good form and drops a further pound to 130 following four runners-up slots from the last five outings, starting that sequence from 134. Deserves a change of fortune and this looks to be the opportunity over his favoured trip. Tom Bellamy rides.

3.55 - Ballyellis made his handicap bow from 120 at Ludlow in February, finishing mid-division over 2m 5f, but drops back to 2m today and a mark of 118. Showed potential over this trip the outing before, but now gaining experience can be a threat here. Looks to be a value each way proposition, Joe Anderson rides and takes off 10lbs.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Day

3.30 - Bristol De Mai finished 7th in the 2017 Gold Cup but didn’t run at the festival last year and takes his chance again. Has run his best races at Haydock winning two Betfair Chases, the latest in which he had four of today’s fancied rivals well behind him. A fall last time at Kempton was his only career fall and he’s been given time to both recover and prepare for today. He’s in very good order and we feel that he has a live chance on form with these rivals and will give a very good performance today. Excellent each way value at this morning’s prices - surely he’d be shorter had he not fallen last time - a big run expected, Daryl Jacob aboard.

5.30 - Mr Antolini and Kapgarry both take their chances in the festival closing race for conditional jockeys.

  • Mr Antolini goes from a mark of 140 and went well at Haydock over 2m 3f three outings ago to take 3rd, suggesting that today’s 2m 4+f is within his compass. Pulled up in early February over a sharper two mikes and class 1 event at Sandown, he comes into this with good each way prospects. Jordan Nailor rides.
  • Kapgarry put in a good run over 2m 5f at the November meeting here in a grade 2 novice hurdle, but from marks of 130 and 129 respectively in two handicaps since, has finished down the field. Down a further couple of pounds today, he’s still relatively inexperienced with just seven runs to date, but is capable and has improvement to come. Could run a good race, Stan Sheppard rides.
