With 20/1 shot Bindaree winning the stable's second National, it should be pointed out that it was the stable's other runner Beau, that nearly scuppered the victory! Beau was the stable choice of Carl Llewellyn, but with Carl being unseated at the 14th, the horse decided to follow his stablemate round the course. This nearly took it's toll at the final fence when Beau almost collided with Bindaree, which may well have handed the race to Whats Up Boys, but pilot Jim Culloty took evasive action before switching to the inside rail and driving Bindaree to victory by one and three quarter lengths. Whats Up Boys took the runner-up berth with Blowing Wind taking third.
Jim Culloty's win made him the first Jockey since 1976 (John Burke) to take both the Cheltenham Gold Cup (on Best Mate) and the National in the same season, but his glory nearly didn't happen and was down to the bad luck of Jamie Goldstein, who had broken his leg in a fall at Ludlow a few days before the race.
Nigel watched the race alongside Philip Hobbs, trainer of runner-up Whats Up Boys, the pair congratulating each other in turn as the lead switched a couple of times in the closing stages!
